Meet our artists: Artist Resume

Where I belong, Toku Turangawaewae, Swadesh Hai Mera स्वदेश है मेरा  was first exhibited at the Te Taunga Community Hub, Auckland War Memorial Museum: Tamaki Paenga Hira in 2022 at the first group show of Contemporary Indian Artists from Aotearoa New Zealand. This work converges several aspects of the artists creative journey. Where I belong, Toku Turangawaewae, Swadesh Hai Mera स्वदेश है मेरा represents a sense of place and belonging culturally, physically and spiritually. It evolved from the artist’s ongoing interest in how symbols communicate meaning. The motifs derive from cultural practices associated with women from the artist's Indian and Maori cultures. Specifically the artist has incorporated geometric and organic patterns derived from mehndi and moko kauae. The landscape within the composition is of Torere Bay where her people have lived since her ancestor Torerenuiarua disembarked from the Tainui waka in c1200. The amo is from the wharenui Torerenuiarua.
